Last Organic Outpost is non profit organization started by Joe Nelson Icet in 2004 and is stewarded today by Joe, his wife Marcella, their kids and all the great volunteers who work with the Last Organic Outpost community. While we are not certified organic we only use natural methods and do not use chemicals, pesticides or fertilizers. We even make our own soil - the famous "Joe's Magic Mix"!

Our farms and gardens have always been located in Houston's inner city. We currently have two locations: a small garden in the 3rd ward where we have over 70 fruit trees and have some chickens and the main farm located at 711 N. Emile in Houston's 5th ward. The Emile Street Community Farm and adjacent city lot cover over 2.5 acres. We farm all year around and grow vegetables from all over the world. We enjoy finding seed from other countries that is suited to Houston and like to try new things.

We believe that everyone should be growing food everywhere. Food security means being able walk to, bicycle to, see food growing from your window. Everything that happens at the Outpost is always a collaboration of people and ideas. We believe in combining, art, music and farming to foster a greater sense of community and encourage you to attend one of our events which are always a social forum for ideas, information and creative interests.

If you have an idea related to food and farming, come bring it to the Outpost and try it. We believe in collaboration of people and ideas and encourage you to share with the Outpost community. We believe in doing, not in planning and formal classes, so if you come out and work with us we will share what we do and hopefully gain new information from you!

One of the things we have always done is swap sweat equity for vegetables. So, come farm with us, plant a few things and take home a bag of vegetables for supper for your hard work.

Our main farm, the Emile Street Community Farm is located at 711 N. Emile. We are open to the public every weekend , Saturday from 9 until dark and Sunday 10 until 5. When we have vegetables we have a "Farming Market" from 10 to 4 on Saturday and Sunday, where our kids earn their allowances by being certified pickers.
