Annie Leonard is in several excellent, short films discussing a variety of environmental issues (~20min each, freely available on the web). They are fun to watch and simple to understand. 'The Story of Stuff' is the first one and discusses consumerism.
link to 'The Story of Stuff'It makes the point, amusingly, that the large-scale economic systems that are currently in place (and we invented), are keeping us trapped in the cycle of 'spending' most of our lives,
working at jobs that are not humanly fulfilling,
to make enough money to have expensive ad delivery devices,
which we spend our remaining free time passively watching to create artificial desires,
for goods that don't really address our true spiritual and physical human needs,
and so never satisfy us so we need to work longer to get more money to ............
It also correctly points out the fallacy of thinking that recycling (in the absence of drastically reducing consumerism) will solve our environmental problems.
One great solution is to grow some of your own food sustainably! Organic vegetable, fruit, and herb gardening reduces ad exposure (indoctrination) time and generates the true spiritual and physical 'goods' that we all need!!!
